Located: Houaphanh is enclosed by Vietnam to the north, east and south-east, Xieng Khouang to the south-west and Luang Prabang to the west.

Total area: 16,500 square kilometers.

Population: The province has a population of 280,000 people and twenty-seven different ethnic groups including Khmu, Tai Daeng and Yao.

08 Districts: Xamneua, Xiengkhor, Viengthong, Viengxay, Huameuang, Xamtay, Sopbao and Add.

Houaphanh Province is the birthplace of the Lao People's Democratic Republic. As yet, it is one of the least visited provinces in the country and offers an authentic and varied experience for visitors. Enjoy a pristine natural environment of mountains, rivers, waterfalls and forests, visit the caves at Viengxay for a unique insight into the history of the country, and discover the mysterious standing stones of Hintang Archaeological Park which date back more than 2000 year.

How do I get there

* By air
Lao Airlines flies periodically between Vientiane and Xam Neua, the provincial capital of Houaphanh (flight time is one hour and 15 minutes).

* By bus
Buses leave for Vientiane (25 hours), Phonsavanh (8 hours), Nong Khiaw (12 hours) and Luang Prabang (16 hours).
Houaphanh is also easily accessible for those arriving from Vietnam. There are buses from Thanh Hoa in Vietnam to the Lao/Vietnamese border at Nameo. From the border visitors can catch a bus to Xam Neua for onward travel.

* Motorbike Rental Service
Motorbikes may be rented from Thone Motorbike Shop, approximately 40 metres from the Tourism Information Office (towards the bus station). The owner of the shop does not speak English, if you require assistance, staff from the Tourism Information Office will be happy to help you.

* Other Rental Services
Tuk-tuks, songthaews (pickups with benches that seat 6-8 people) and minibuses (for up to 9 people) may be rented for touring the provinces or for onward travel.
Accommodation in Houaphanh
Houaphanh has a range of inexpensive hotels and guesthouses offering basic levels of comfort and amenities. The Provincial Tourism Office will be happy to provide details of all accommodation options to visitors
