By Air
The Penang International Airport, known as Bayan Lepas International Airport, is 16km away from Georgetown. There are daily flights from major towns and cities in the country, including Kuala Lumpur. Cathay Pacific, Eva air, Malaysia Airlines (MAS), Singapore Airlines and Thai International offer connecting flights to this island.

By Rail
The journey on the train, Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth takes approximately 6 hours. First and second-class passengers can travel in comfortable air-conditioned cabins. Taking the train to travel allows visitors the opportunities to see the countryside. There are also regular train services to Alor Setar, Padang Besar, Hatyai and Bangkok from Butterworth.
If you are traveling from Singapore by train, transit at KL Sentral to take the KL-Ipoh-Butterworth-Hatyai train heading towards the North. From Butterworth, there are taxi services to Penang Island. There is a one-time charge when entering the island at the Butterworth Terminal. The service is available 24 hours.
By Land
There are coach and express bus services to Penang from most parts of Malaysia and Singapore.
By Driving
Take the North-South Expressway that connects Kuala Lumpur and Bukit Kayu Hitam (490km) up at the North.
From Singapore, on the North-South Expressway, you will pass through from E2 towards Kuala Lumpur and E1 towards Kedah.
When you reach travelling on Kuala Lumpur – Jalan Sungai (Sg) Besi, take a different lane heading towards Kuala Lumpur-Jalan Istana / Jalan Damansara and going onto Jalan Duta. You will reach a toll. Drive towards North (E1) on the Jalan Duta-Sungai Buloh Expressway.
When driving on the North-South Expressway, head towards Kedah. Exit the expressway through toll no. 161 for Penang and cross the Penang Bridge. If heading towards Butterworth, exit at toll no. 162 for the ferry terminal. From here, vehicles can take the ferry across to the island. A flat rate of RM7 is charged for vehicles and passengers are charged RM0.60.
By Ferry
There are 24-hour ferry services to and from Penang island and the mainland. Ferries leave Butterworth and stop at the Ferry terminal near Pengkalan Weld in Georgetown. Tickets are to be purchased at the Butterworth terminal. Rates are applicable for a return journey.
