State Emblem / Logo |
|
|
The State Flag is divided into three equal horizontal stripes. The three
colours represent the three branches of the royal family whereby the throne is
shared in rotation. The white stripe symbolises the Sultan while the yellow
stripe is that of the Raja Muda. The black stripe represents the Raja DiHilir.
|
|
The crest worn by the Ruler on his tengkolok symbolises his sovereignty. The
crescent stands for Islam, the official religion. The rice flower stands for
paddy-planting, the prime occupation of the people.

Perak Darul Ridzuan ( Land of Grace ) |

Land of Silver Tin |
|
|
Perak is a state that is defined by the
course of its namesake river. The state was renowned for its rich tin deposits.
It is believed from that the state derived its name, which means silver in
Malay. Until the nineteenth century, Perak's people were concentrated along the
Perak River, and the chief city was riverside Kuala Kangsar. However, the
discovery of wondrously rich tin deposits in surrounding valleys lead to the
establishment of and transfer of the capital to Taiping and, later, Ipoh. The
tin mines around Ipoh are reputedly the richest in the world, and it is no
surprise that the city has expanded steadily from the time the mines were
discovered in the nineteenth century. Today, Ipoh is one of Malaysia's larger
cities, with a population of about half a million people. |
|
|
Perak is heir to the Malaysian history that
came to a close in 1511 with the capture of Malacca
by the Portuguese. The leaders of the Malaccan empire retreated south to
Johor, where they re-established their power. The eldest son of the
Sultan, however, soon headed to the north, where he accepted an offer to become
the first sultan of Perak. Today, only Perak among the Malaysian states
possesses a royal house descended directly from the rulers of legendary
Malacca. |
|
|
Despite the continuity of its royal house,
Perak has one of the most troubled histories of any Malaysian state. The
discovery of tin deposits of unprecedented richness in Perak at the middle of
the nineteenth century brought rapid prosperity as well as considerable
political turmoil. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, Perak's
situation had stabilised and its enormous natural resources began to pay off. |

Dining |
|
|
Perak offers a variety of
delicious food, especially Ipoh. This city is famous for Sar Hor Fun,
Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun, Char Kuey Teow and Bean Sprouts Chicken.
Chinese hawker food can be partaken at the fan-ventilated food court at
Jalan Clarke (opposite the Excelsior Hotel), the coffee shops at Lorong
Panglima, Wooley Food Centre in Ipoh Garden, and Old Town Food Centre at Jalan
Leech. Excellent nasi kandar is found at Medan Selera (Jalan Gopeng), Medan
Selera Stadium, and the food stalls at Jalan Dato’ Tahwil Azhar (near the
children’s playground and the Railway Station). Two excellent nasi kandar
restaurants are on Jalan Kalsom, facing the Tanjung Rambutan Bus Station. There
are numerous restaurants around the Cathay and Lido cineplexes. Famous edible
products of Ipoh are the Menglembu groundnuts, Kampar Chicken Biscuits, Chart
Tai (bean curd sticks), seedless guavas and pomelos. Pomelo, similar to the
grapefruit, is about the size of soccer ball with fresh green skin and juicy
pink pulps. |

Shopping |
|
|
This state is a place for avid craft
collectors, especially the Royal Town, Kuala Kangsar. Its fine traditional
crafts include labu sayung, an exquisite blackened clay ware that also serves
as water pitcher, bamboo carvings, seashell designs and gold embroidery. Among
popular shops for local handicrafts and souvenirs are at Kampung Padang
Changkat, Kampung Berala, Kampung Kepala Bendang and Enggor. Such shops can
also be found along the Ipoh-Kuala Kangsar trunk road.
