State Emblem / Logo |
|

The top half of the flag, which is yellow in colour, represents the royal
status of the Ruler of Perlis. The bottom half of the flag, on the other hand,
is blue and stands for the people of Perlis. The two colours lay close and in
tangent with each other, reflecting the cordial and close relationship between
the Ruler and his people.

The wreath of paddy represents the primary occupation and main product of the
State. The shield represents the pride and honour of the State. In general, the
emblem reflects the pride of the State in being a rice granary.

The Nation’s Green Plane |
|
|
The smallest state in Malaysia, Perlis lies
at the northwestern extremity of the Malay Peninsula with its western coastline
borders the Straits of Malacca. Bounded by Thailand in the north, and by Kedah
to the east and south, it measures approximately 759 sq. km and has a
population of 175,000. Kangar is the state capital while Arau is the royal
town, where the royal palace and state mosque are seated.
With its unspoilt beauty, rustic charm, padi fields as far as the eye can see
and ancient limestone outcrops, Perlis offers tranquility and countryside
experience for those seeking a breakaway from the hustle and bustle of city
life.
|
|
|
There is a predominance of Malay and Thai
influence here. The people of Perlis indulge in traditional games, dances and
other interesting "hand-me-downs" entertainment. This is evident in its
colourful music and dance performances such as Tarian Canggung (a traditional
post- harvest celebration dance) and Tarian Terinai (traditional dance for
royal ceremonies). |

Dining |
|
|
Perlis is probably the state that serves the
best tom yam in the country, thanks to its neighboring relations to
Thailand. Besides Thai dishes, you must also try the exotic traditional Malay
fare, Chinese cuisine and Indian meal. Laksa Perlis is a seafood noodles with
homemade thick, rich, spicy, and creamy fish gravy. Fresh seafood is also
easily found here, especially in Kuala Perlis. |
|
|
Kuala
Perlis. Known for its seafood and fishing excursions, Kuala Perlis
is located at the estuarine delta of the Sungai Perlis. It is also noted for
its excellent laksa, a dish of rice noodles dipped in spicy fish soup with
sliced onions and cucumber. This also serves as the entry and exit point to
Phuket Island and other coastal towns and villages of Southern Thailand. |
|
|
Shopping |
|
|
Padang
Besar. Padang Besar is a bustling town situated at the
Malaysia-Thailand border.
The border market is a shopper's haunt for
Malaysians and tourists seeking good bargains. Handicrafts, souvenirs, clothes,
shoes, bags, leather goods are found here. A leisure tour of the market makes
an interesting outing for non-shoppers. |
|
|
Perlis
Cultural Craft Complex. Situated about 8 km from Kangar, visitors
can get handicrafts such as the hand-drawn batiks, silverware and other
homemade items as souvenirs. |
