  Land of the Hornbills

Known as the ‘ Land of Hornbills’, Sarawak is Malaysia’s largest state with many hidden treasures that would enthral the most discerning nature lovers. With an area of 124,450 square kilometers, this Borneo paradise is a region of endless fascination, possessing the world's oldest tropical rainforests and latticed with rivers and tributaries and home to the largest cave chamber in the world, unique fauna and flora, white beaches, and remote islands.
The modern history of Sarawak, whiffs of Victorian melodrama. In 1839, when Sarawak was rebelling against the Brunei Sultanate, an English adventurer named James Brooke arrived and volunteered to quell the revolt. Brooke was successful, and as a reward the Pengiran Mahkota of Brunei made Brooke the Rajah of Sarawak in 1841. His nephew, Charles Brooke in 1868, succeeded James. In 1917, Charles’ eldest son, Charles Vyner succeeded him. The Brooke family of “White Raja’s” continued to bring ever growing tracts of Borneo into their control throughout their rule until World War II when the Japanese forces occupied Sarawak. It was subsequently ceded to Britain after the war and became a British Crown Colony. Sarawak joined Malaysia in 1963 and today observes a democratic system of government.
Sarawak is a vast land not only rich in resources such as pepper, cocoa, palm oil, timber and oil, it is also rich in cultural treasures, reflecting the influence of the state's 1.5 million population made up of 24 ethnic groups as well as the western influence of Sarawak's "White Rajahs".
The state’s endless rivers form its transportation backbone. Perahus are the most common crafts used along the rivers. They are low-lying pencil thin canoes equipped with outboard motors, and they churn along with surprising speed and agility. Riding in one, breezing past the dense jungle walls is a worthwhile experience.
Malaysia Airlines flies regularly to Kuching International Airport as well as to Miri from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Singapore, and Kota Kinabalu. Boats are a common mode of transport in Sarawak, as dense vegetation crisscrossed with rivers in its interior. Travel in areas not assessible by boat is often by light aircrafts and helicopters. Buses services are available in major towns.
Entertainment
Kuching offers a number of pubs and bars such as Amigos, Casablanca Lounge, Cat City, The Club, Discovery, Hornbill’s Corner Café, Khatulistiwa, Latino, Margherita Lounge and Miami. They are mostly in and around Taman Sri Sarawak, across Kuching Hilton, Jalan Bukit Mata and the Riverbank Suites.
Karaoke is a popular pastime with most major hotels having lounges with karaoke facilities. In Miri, check out popular watering holes such as Balcony, Cherry Berries and Coco, just to name a few, around the Pelita Commercial Centre.
Sports and Leisure
Like most modern locations, the capital city and other major towns are not without facilities for activities like swimming, bowling, golfing, fishing and mountain biking. In Kuching, the public swimming pool at Jalan Padungan is a popular haunt while Reservoir Park is a well-liked jogging trail. At Riverside Complex, there is the 24-lane Riverside Superbowl.
